Natural Solutions for Hormones

The use of essential oils for health dates back thousands of years, and is even referenced in the Bible. I’m continually looking for ways to decrease the toxic load on my body and find natural living solutions for everyday health concerns and beauty products. The more I learn, the more amazed I become by the incredible healing power of essential oils.

As women, many of us deal with hormonal imbalance of some sort. Whether from thyroid function or progesterone and estrogen balance, the female hormone cycle is typically much more complicated than the male. This is because our hormones fluctuate throughout the month and with factors such as pregnancy, whereas, male hormones remain relatively the same.

Essential oils can help naturally balance our hormones and support healthy progesterone and estrogen levels (extremely important for fertility and pregnancy) and thyroid hormone function.

Three of the top essential oils for hormonal balance are: clary sage, thyme and ylang-ylang.

 

  1. Clary Sage – A 2014 study in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research found that the inhalation of clary sage was able to decrease cortisol (the “stress” hormone) levels by 36 percent and improve TSH (thyroid hormone) levels. Researchers concluded that “clary sage oil had a statistically significant effect on lowering cortisol and had an anti-depressant effect on improving mood.” This is just one of the studies proving the value of clary sage on hormonal balance.Clary sage helps balance estrogen production in our body. This is important because many health issues today, like infertility, PCOS and estrogen-based cancers, are caused from excess estrogen in the body.   2. Thyme – Research in the Proceedings of the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine found thyme oil to have progesterone balancing effects. Thyme is beneficial in improving our progesterone production. Many women are low in progesterone, which has been linked to infertility, PCOS and depression, just to name a few. Its effects on improving progesterone makes thyme a great oil for naturally balancing your hormones, and hopefully avoiding synthetic treatments and prescription drugs which mask symptoms and often leads to disease and serious side effects.
  3. Ylang-Ylang – One of the oldest known medicinal properties of Ylang-Ylang is it’s ability to fight depression, anxiety, and chronic stress, while relaxing and inducing an uplifting effect on the body, making it a natural remedy for our endocrine, cardiovascular, reproductive and digestive systems. It’s also a natural aphrodisiac and is shown to act as a natural impotence remedy since it can help increase libido.
